Nice skies and snow

I took an awsome photo when I got to school today, it had a bit of sunrise and a mix of clouds. The daily weather photo page is new and will now show my favorite clouds and photos of weather.

It is currently snowing lightly. When I got here there was a mix of what I believe are cirrus and stratus clouds. I will check my guide and confirm later. I believe they are cirrus unicus (mares tail) clouds which appear ahead of weather systems in winter especially in northern states.

Today's stats as of 8:34am:

The temperature is 5.5°F
The wind is going to the NE at 2.2 mph
Humidity is 75%
Dewpoint is -1°F

Yesterday I predicted snow, and it is now snowing.

I don't see any new fronts moving in our direction, but since there is no change, I predict tomorrow will be cold again, with similar precipitation.

Snow!

It was blustery outside today. My day started out decent, as in it wasn't snowing when I started out for school. I took this picture on my way to school because I saw some cloud formations that I thought I could recognize in my field guide to weather:

It is hard to see, but you can see some lines of cloud in the middle of the picture, down the road. I found in my guide, that these are called Stratocumulus undulatus clouds (I think). The National Audbon Society field guide to weather states that these clouds " represent saturation near the surface of the ground... [often are] travelling with large weather systems such as warm or cold fronts."(459)

Since that picture it began snowing consistantly and is windy, there is poor visibility.

Yesterday I predicted more snow because of a cold front coming in from the north, which can be seen in last post's weather.com picture. The clouds this morning confirmed that prediction as they can travel with cold fronts! kinda neat.

Here are today's stats as of 2:42pm:

Temperature: 19.4°F
Wind: 1.6 mph to the SE
Dewpoint 13°F
Humidity: 75%

Today's weather.com picture shows a stationary warm and cold front. I am guessing that this weather system will continue into tomorrow, so possibly more snow and low temperatures.

Jan. 29 Icy and dreary.

Hey!

Its really wet and dreary outside. Class was cancelled this morning due to icy road conditions (I didn't know until I came to campus!). So today we were to get started with blogger, since class was cancelled I'm just going to wing it again today, and hope for the best. :D

I really like to use wunderground.com on my desktop to view the weather, and also weatherbug app on my smartphone. I think weather is one of the great icebreakers, everyone experiences weather, so its often a great way to start a conversation.

Well, according to wunderground.com here are today's stats as of 10:38am:

Temperature is 35.4°F
Wind is 3.1 mph to the SW with gusts of 8.3
Pressure is 29.59 in
Humidity is 87%
and Dewpoint is 32°F

Image from weather.com:
You can see the wind coming from up from the south, creating warmer temperatures and fog.

Fog on my way to school at 7:30am (don't worry I wasn't driving)

I got my National Audubon Society Field Guide to Weather in the mail last night. I will try using it tomorrow. Yesterday was warm, and had heavy rain and snow. Looking at the weather.com picture, I am guessing it may get colder tomorrow, with more snow or ice possible.

Here we go...

So, I have been tasked with taking a daily log of the weather for my Geography 341 class, Weather and Society, at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. I will be using a variety of resources, online and in hand that will help me observe and predict the weather. Right now I don't really know what I'm doing, but I will give it a quick shot to begin.

It is 2:34pm and the current temperature according to Weatherbug is 29°F, with a high of 30° F and a low of 21° F. The wind is blowing to the S at 5mph. Looking outside it looks like a mix of rain and snow. The day started out decent, with an overcast of clouds. Judging by the radar I'm guessing that tomorrow might be similar, but hopefully less snow.

This storm caught me quite by surprise. My mother in law was visiting over the weekend and I happened to check the weather report when I woke up at 8am, and I noticed a severe winter storm warning and I let her know, so she was able to drive home to Marshfield before the storm even arrived. So we didn't get to spend the day together as planned, but at least she was able to get home safely.

I will try to add pictures of what I see both in person and online. Here is a picture from Weather.com of today's storm, which I've just learned is named Luna:
